OXYGEN: THE OTHER SIDE

  • Free radicals cause oxidation in biological cells. With aging, increased amount of oxidation may result in diseases like Alzheimer's, Cancer, Malaria, Parkinson's disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
  • Lack of suitable combative methods for these diseases is a reason for no increase in the maximum Life Span Potential.
  • Researchers believe that it could be possible to prevent, postpone or arrest these diseases through regular intake of Antioxidants.

Oxygen is the first and foremost requirement for survival . However this results also in a biochemical reaction in our bodies called oxidation. Oxidation takes place due to the presence of Free Radicals like Reactive Oxygen Specie (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Specie (RNS).

Although the human body is equipped with oxidative-defense mechanisms, with age, they are overpowered by the reactive specie. This occurs as the oxidative-defense mechanism reduces with age with reduced absorption of antioxidants from food or genetically programmed reduction in the synthesis of Antioxidants in cells. They arrest the harm caused in the body due to oxidation but do not eliminate it completely. This damage caused to the body tissues accumulates with age with the increase in the production of the reactive specie and this contributes to the growth of several diseases associated with aging that grip our bodies permanently like Alzheimer's, Cancer, Malaria, Parkinson's disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, (Sohal,1986) to mention some. Over the past decade researchers have made enough progress in understanding the link between these oxygenated metabolites and human diseases. This leads us to the fact that intake of foods rich in this element called Antioxidants can prevent oxidation in our body, leading to a healthy and youthful well being.
