PRAKALPA PROGRESS REPORT

The ABITA Gramin Krishi Unnayan Prakalpa reported good results for the period November 11 to December 10, 2003. The project covered 2,665.30 bigha (out of 3,350 bigha) under its Rabi demonstration programmein-volving 1,125 farm families of 118 villages.The distribution was as follows: vegetables

(1,289.40 bigha), oilseed(1,043.50 bigha), pulses (240.90 bigha), spice & condiments (76.50 bigha) and cereals (15 bigha).
Harvesting of Sali paddy is continuing with maximum yield of Ranjit as 35 mnd/bigha (Chabua), 32 mnd/bigha (Margherita), 30.625 mnd/bigha (Moran) and 26 mnd/bigha (Dhekiajuli). Kharif pulses are on harvesting stage.
The cocoons produced from DLFs (Kotia) supplied by the Prakalpa to the rearers are at their reeling stage. One spinning machine has been supplied to Margherita at a subsidised rate.
The coconut plants planted under the horticulture demonstration pro-gramme, are in good condition. The have requested the Prakalpa to expand the project for uplifting the economy.
 
A DE-ADDICTION CAMP
A de-addiction camp, part of the final phase of the ILO-sponsored Work-place Prevention Programme on Alcohol Abuse, was organized for the benefit of tea estate workers at Phulbari Central Hospital during 24-30 No-vember, 2003. The project was an ILO-ABITA venture organized with as-sistance from LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health, Tezpur and the Joint Director of Health Services, Sonitpur.
The programme, which covered 16 estates in Tezpur Circle, aimed at spreading awareness and reduction of alcohol abuse, thereby lowering the rate of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems among workers. Apart from boosting productivity of workers and enjoy better earnings, the pro-gramme also covered the psychological aspectsof the causes of alcoholism and their treatment as well as themedical aspects of alcohol-related ailments and

their cure. ITA Secretary General Mr. D.Chakravarti inaugurated the programme. He lauded ILO for its endeavour to address such social menace. Dr. (Mrs.) A. Baruah, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health gave an outline of the treatment process. Dr. B. Bharali, Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officer spoke on the necessity of such camps and need to organize them frequently.
